Now more than ever, it is important to keep in touch with friends and loved ones. But there is a risk to this: scammers posing as loved ones asking for money. According to the FTC, in 2018 1 in 4 people over the age of 70 reported sending cash to an imposter posing as a family or friend.
If you get a call from someone claiming to be a friend or family member in trouble, call the friend or family member using a number that you know is correct. Never send cash or gift cards through the mail. Tell the FTC if you get one of these scammer calls.
